Pot Luck
Pot lucks have become popular in progressive Jewish circles. A pot luck is a social gathering. All participents bring with them some food. All contributions are put together and a common dinner is served. Participents are free to choose what they want to bring so the meny will vary.
Progressive Jews have a liberal attitude towards kashrut and kosher laws. In our gatherings, we do, however follow some of these laws, especially the one prohibition mixing of dairy and meat. All PJN pot lucks are dairy. Please do not bring any food containing meat or meat products. Dishes made of kosher fish are suitable - salmon, trout, tuna, pollack, cod, herring and flounder are ok.
Salads, entrées, vegetarian dishes, cakes desserts and drinks are all good contributions to a pot luck. Your contribution need not neccesarily be home made. Vegetarian pizza, cheeses, bought cakes, ice cream, fruits and juices are both common and popular at our gatherings. The most importent thing is that you feel good about what you bring.
Many people have asked about the amount of food to
bring. As a rule of the thumb we say that you should bring enough to serve
as a side dish for 6 people. |
